The shocking moment Prince Charles realised Princess Diana was ‘new star of the show’

In October 1980, the pair made a three-day visit to Wales to much cheer from locals. And while they attended the address, Prince Charles came to the conclusion on Diana. The claims come from royal expert and author Andrew Morton.

Writing in his book ‘Diana: Her True Story’, Mr Morton said: “The crowds made it painfully obvious who was the new star of the show – the Princess of Wales.

“Charles was left apologising for not having enough wives to go round. If he took one side of the street during a walkabout the crowd collectively groaned, it was his wife they had come to see.

“‘I seem to do nothing but collect flowers these days,’ he said.

“‘I know my role.’”

Diana separated from Prince Charles in 1996 following 15 years of marriage.

During her time as a member of the Royal Family, Diana became one of the most recognisable and popular faces in the world.

On the specific day Diana separated from Charles, one royal expert has spoken of the touching question Diana uttered to Charles.

Writing in her book, ‘The Queen and Di: The Untold Story’, Ingrid Seward spoke of the moment the pair met for the first time following their separation.

The two met in Kensington Palace in the first-floor drawing room Diana called the salon of her apartment.

Walking into the room, Diana allegedly asked Charles, “Why did this have to happen?”.

Also writing in the same book, Ms Seward revealed the strain of public life on the royal.

Princess Diana died in 1997.

Charles went on to marry Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.
