The Queen had spent several days resting in Windsor Castle. She was “delighted” the all-clear ahead of the festive season.

Last month, following “preliminary investigations”, the 95-year-old monarch spent one night in hospital. She subsequently cancelled visits to Northern Ireland and pulled out of the COP26 climate change summit in Glasgow.

She will spend the weekend, organising this year’s festive get-together, on the Sandringham Estate.

It’s expected that her minibreak will be spent at Wood Farm, where Prince Philip – who died age 99 in April – lived during his final years following his retirement from public life in 2017.

Despite withdrawing temporarily from official public duties on her doctors’ orders, the Queen is said to be “totally committed” to hosting her family this Christmas.

According to a royal source: “The Queen had been hoping she would still be able to spend the weekend at Sandringham and was delighted her doctors gave her the all-clear to travel.

“Her Majesty is very much looking forward to hosting her family at her Norfolk home for the Christmas holiday and there is much preparation to be done in time to accommodate everyone who has been invited.

“The Queen has many happy memories of being at Sandringham with the family over Christmas and was in the firm belief that she was far better off being there in person to oversee everything as much as possible.

“But she travelled on the understanding with her doctors that she continues to rest as advised.”

The Royal Standard will still fly at Windsor, signifying the monarch’s primary residence and where the royal court is based.

She will return to Windsor Castle, where she spent last Christmas due to coronavirus restrictions, shortly after her trip.

Buckingham Palace aides assured that medics took an “understandably cautious approach” to her hospital admission.

Her Majesty was later advised to take complete rest. Her doctors even put her daily dog walks off limits and she has given up riding for the winter.

Buckingham Palace said the Queen could carry out some light, desk-based duties as well as participating in video call meetings and greeting ambassadors virtually.

She recently recorded a video message for world leaders attending the climate conference, urging them to work together to curb climate change.

The Queen was represented in Glasgow by her heirs Prince Charles and Prince William.
