Queen Elizabeth II, 94, and Prince Philip, 99, have been married for 73 years and over the decades the royal couple have spent stints of time apart. Tomorrow is Mother’s Day in the UK and the Queen will mark the milestone apart from her husband as the Duke of Edinburgh remains in hospital.

Philip was first admitted to hospital on February 16 after feeling unwell.

The Palace subsequently revealed he was being treated for an infection as well as undergoing tests and observation for a pre-existing heart condition.

On March 3 the Duke underwent successful heart surgery and has been recovering in hospital ever since.

While the Queen and Philip have spent weeks and even months apart from each other before, this is the Duke’s longest-ever hospital admission.

The royal couple have been based at Windsor Castle for the best part of the pandemic after the Queen moved her office there from Buckingham Palace ahead of the first national lockdown.

COVID-19 restrictions were relaxed on Monday allowing two people from separate households to socialise outdoors in England.

Rather than spend Mother’s Day alone at Windsor Castle the Queen could choose to visit one of several family members who live nearby.

Princess Eugenie, 30, is currently based as Frogmore Cottage, a stone’s throw away from the castle and could meet her grandmother for a stroll.

Eugenie recently became a mother herself after giving birth to her son August Philip Hawke on February 9.

While the Queen won’t be able to see both Eugenie and her new great-grandson at once, she may be able to some time with her granddaughter.

The Queen’s second son Prince Andrew, 61, also lives nearby at The Royal Lodge in Great Windsor Park.

The pair are both fond of horseriding and have been photographed out riding together in the grounds of Windsor Castle before.

Prince Charles, 72, is the only Royal Family member to have visited Philip in hospital since his admission last month.

The Queen is thought unlikely to visit her husband as an inpatient because of the ongoing risk posed by COVID-19.

The Duke is known to detest any kind of fuss and a visit from the Queen would be likely to attract huge attention.

Ahead of the coronavirus pandemic, the Queen and Philip spent most of the year living separately.

Following his retirement from public life in 2017, the Duke made Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate his main base while the Queen remained at Buckingham Palace.

The couple would reunite for the holidays but spent weeks and sometimes months apart.

Despite the distance between them, Philip is still said to be the Queen’s closest confidant and they are thought to speak on the phone daily when they are not together.

Buckingham Palace has not confirmed when the Duke might be discharged from hospital.
