The pretty seaside town named one of the coolest places to live in the UK

According to a recent survey, Leigh-on-Sea has been voted one of the coolest places to live in the UK, and it’s not hard to see why.

Leigh-on-Sea, situated alongside the renowned Southend-on-Sea, exudes distinctive character and enchantment. A visit to this town is highly recommended, offering a plethora of captivating attractions and dining establishments for your amusement.

For over a thousand years Leigh has been known as a popular fishing town, going from a small village to an important hub of maritime and commercial significance between the 14th and 18th centuries. As well as this, it played a crucial role in protecting the Thames from Spanish, Dutch and French naval threats.

From art galleries and artisan boutiques to a variety of pubs, superb seafood eateries, and renowned cockle sheds, this charming haven presents an ideal setting to relax, rejuvenate, and savour the invigorating sea breeze.

It was voted earlier this year as one of the top 20 coolest places to live according to a new survey conducted by Wellness company Naturecan with the British public asking where they think is coolest to live – with Leigh-on-Sea coming out near the top.

Local resident, Jean de Tourtoulon, 70, has lived her whole life in the town and said the communities spirit is never ending, and the closeness of its residents is what separates it from the rest.

She said: “Covid really showed us how much we all care for each other, we started dog walking clubs when we were all in lockdown just so we all knew we had someone we could talk to when we needed.

“I took it upon myself to let visitors and locals know what’s going on in the town, I wanted to make sure we didn’t become a ghost town so I would just get in touch and let people know what’s going on.”

Visitors can expect to see Old Leigh, Belfairs Wood, Leigh Heritage Centre, Leigh on Sea Brewery, Leigh Library gardens, and a deck of restaurants and cafes.

Jean said: “There are about five pubs on a short road in Old Leigh and as many restaurants, there’s always music playing.

“I would recommend the folk festival and the Old Leigh Regata, they’re both really popular with residents, not forgetting the town art trail.”

Jean credits its generous community for recently taking in Ukrainian people fleeing the current war with Russia, offering them a place to stay and even local businesses helping them with employment.

She said: “We’re a supportive community, I have had Ukrainian guests stay at my house and was inundated with supplies from everyone in the town, people gave up money, clothes and restaurant vouchers.

“Businesses here have even helped them with employment, we’re a very close community and we’re all here for each other.”
