A pretty little UK city has officially been named the world’s prettiest, according to scientists. Judges based their findings on its spectacular buildings. 

The northern English city of Chester is a historical powerhouse, boasting the largest Roman Amphitheatre in Britain among its many brilliant features. It is also home to the country’s oldest racecourse. 

But recent research from the country’s brightest minds has revealed that Chester has the highest percentage of buildings that align with the ‘golden ratio’. The term refers to a mathematical ratio of proportions which indicates levels of beauty.

The golden ratio is said to reflect “natural aesthetic perfection” which isn’t limited to just buildings, according to TimeOut. Some of its most perfect examples include a range of Le Corbusier’s structures and Leonardo da Vinci’s artwork.

Chester scored 83.7 percent in the groundbreaking research, making it arguably the most beautiful city in the world. It narrowly beat Venice, which hit 83.3 percent, with London’s 82 percent meaning it came close behind in third place.  

The researchers used Google Street View to scan thousands of front-facing photos of streets, before plotting points at each building’s corner to work out the maths.

Chester was a major Tudor town with plenty of stunning structures originating from the era. Among these include Chester Town Hall, Eaton Hall and Bishop Lloyd’s House. 

Cheshire’s county capital also has the most complete city walls in Britain, adding to its charm. The cathedral city is also home to a brilliant castle which has seen many a notable event during its time. 

The city is also famous for Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s proudest which competes with London Zoo for the top spot at awards. Chester FC, meanwhile, play in the sixth tier of English football, although remarkably its stadium is literally just inside Wales, given the town’s close proximity to the country – the border actually goes through the ground’s main stand.
