All four were born prematurely and endured battles for survival that for some began in the womb. But all have come through, making their first family Christmas at home even more special.
Abbie Mason-Woods, 34, lives in Colchester with husband Karl, 35, and their twins Milla and Patience, born last December at just 27 weeks.
Abbie, a primary school pastoral leader, said: “At 22 weeks pregnant doctors discovered there was a poor blood flow to Patience. A few weeks later doctors told me the twins had to be delivered by emergency caesarean or they wouldn’t survive.
“They were born just a week before Christmas.
“Both of them were so incredibly tiny, we just had to pray they would survive. They had a battle for months afterwards to pull through.”
Sam Wilson, 28, and partner Ben Allen, 27, celebrated the birth of daughter Evie five months ago.
But after five miscarriages, when Sam was rushed to hospital 37 weeks into her pregnancy, the couple from Hyde, Greater Manchester, feared the worst.
Sam, a children’s nurse, said: “We had felt incredibly lucky when I fell pregnant with Evie as it had been a long journey for us.
“They delivered her in July by emergency caesarean, weighing 4lb 2oz. We could so easily have lost her, so I’m just thankful that we went straight into hospital when we did.”
Primary school teacher Elleasha Varia and husband Dilpesh, a 32-year-old in corporate hospitality, had son Keyun eight months ago.
He was born seven weeks early due to premature labour. Elleasha said: “Five days before Keyun was born I was in so much pain I could hardly walk. Keyun had to be delivered by caesarean section when the pain became too much for me. He needed breathing support when he was born, but apart from that he did so well.
“He has been left with a hole in his heart that should have closed after he was born, and if it doesn’t close by April then he will have to have an operation. He’s an incredible little boy.”
Jodie Browne’s son Eoghan was born at 28 weeks, weighing 3lb 10oz. Jodie, 26, who lives in County Tyrone with partner Jerard Elliott, said: “They tried to halt my labour to stop him being born so early, but they couldn’t and he arrived into the world just a few hours later.
“It was such a shock to see him lying there so tiny, but he was moving around all the time, so I knew that he was a fighter. It was a miracle to see what he came through, and what the hospital did.
“Eoghan is thriving now and we feel incredibly lucky to be celebrating Christmas as a family after everything he has been through.”
