The most violent places in Britain – Check if your hometown is listed

Nottingham: CCTV shows moment suspect is tasered and arrested

Violent crime is far less common today than it was just a few decades ago – but this fact has the result of making each incident ever more harrowing.

In the early hours of last Tuesday, June 13, a man fatally stabbed two 19-year-old students and a caretaker in Nottingham, and injured three others by hitting them with a van.

Valdo Calocane, 31, a University of Nottingham alumni himself, has since been charged with three counts of murder.

Just under 4.5 million instances of violent crime – ranging from common assault to murder – were reported in 1995, according to the annual Crime Survey for England and Wales, a record high. This total has now plunged by three-quarters to just over one million today.

Although this decline is encouraging, that rate still implies almost two vicious attacks take place every minute in Britain. The spread of this type of crime across the country also reveals hotspots where rates are worryingly high.

In the year ending September 2022 – the latest period for which local authority-level crime data are available – nowhere was prone to more violence than Birmingham.

Police in the West Midlands city recorded 70,081 instances of “violence against the person” during that time.

While the Metropolitan Police registered a far greater 242,651 incidents, the force covers 32 separate London boroughs, all of which experienced far less violent crime than Birmingham proper.

In second place came Leeds (44,626), followed by Bradford (34,485), Manchester (34,192) and Liverpool (28,754). Nottingham was found to be the 20th most violent city in England and Wales.

At the bottom of the scale are the Isles of Scilly (17), Rutland in the East Midlands (705) and Ribble Valley in Lancashire (1,007).

Acts of “violence against the person” include a broad spectrum of offences from harassment to grievous bodily harm and murder. In 2022, “violence without injury” was found to be the most common type, with homicide the least common at just 632 offences for the year.

A total of 49,265 serious offences involved a knife last year in England and Wales, including 436 attempted murders.

In defiance of falling crime overall, homicides involving knives and other sharp instruments remain persistently high.
