The late Queen’s snack before breakfast that her grandchildren would surely love

Queen Elizabeth’s favourite snack before breakfast was something Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis would surely approve of.

The late Queen, who passed away on September 8, last year was perhaps one of the best-travelled people in the world and sampled hundreds of different types of food.

The first thing the Queen ate in the morning was a few biscuits. But which type of biscuit was her go-to?

Former royal chef Darren McGrady previously said: “When I was there … Chocolate Bath Olivers.”

Darren has previously said: “She is absolutely a chocoholic. Anything we put on the menu that had chocolate on, she would choose, especially chocolate perfection pie.”

Makers Huntley & Palmer describe Chocolate Olivers on their website as: “Rich, dark chocolate, generously enrobed around a crisp slow-baked biscuit Chocolate Olivers are the ultimate biscuit indulgence, made using a patented recipe from the 1930s, which includes hops and malt, with the thickest, richest dark chocolate.”

With her cheeky breakfast treat, the Queen would have her first cup of tea. She preferred Earl Grey, with no sugar and the occasional drop of milk.

While it may surprise you to learn of the Queen’s love of sweet treats, she was not the only royal who enjoyed chocolate.

At the time of Afternoon Tea, the Queen would then have another cup of Earl Grey tea and sample cakes such as ginger cake, jam pennies and chocolate biscuit cake.

The chocolatey treat is also a favourite of her grandson Prince William. In fact, he loved the cake so much that he had it as his second wedding cake at his 2011 nuptials to the Duchess of Cambridge.

It’s well known that Prince William has a sweet tooth. During a video call to schoolchildren before Easter, wife Kate revealed that William couldn’t stop eating their supply of Easter chocolate.

As the couple wished everyone a Happy Easter, William reassured them that: “There will be a lot of chocolate being eaten here, don’t worry!”

Before his wife quickly replied: “You keep eating it!”

When it comes to the chocolate biscuit cake, chocolatier Barry Colenso has said: “Although the McVitie’s Cake Company and I developed it into a wedding cake, we stuck closely to the guidelines issued from Buckingham Palace to make sure it was just right.

“It was rich, indulgent and creamy with a really snappy texture which came from the Rich Tea biscuits.”
