Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duke of Duchess of Cambridge, have important royal roles to fulfil as they come behind the Queen and Prince Philip, and Prince Charles and Camilla, as the Royal Family’s most prominent couples. Alongside their royal duties, they have a busy family life as they care for their three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. George, Charlotte and Louis are third, fourth and fifth in line to the throne respectively. 

However, when William  was growing up with his parents Princess Diana and Prince Charles, Diana famously tried to give her children as normalan upbringing as possible, even telling her boys that the crowd of photographers they faced as youngsters were just there for her.

However, William’s innocence was shattered when he started school and schoolmates began to treat him differently.

Andrew Morton, in his 2011 book “William and Catherine: Their Lives, Their Wedding” delves into the prince’s younger days.

Mr Morton writes: “Before William attended school, he genuinely had no idea that he was any different from anyone else.

“His innocence of his position was soon ended by fellow pupils, who left him in no doubt who he was.

“On one occasion a classmate reportedly asked him: ‘Don’t you know the Queen?’

“William looked at him and replied: ‘Don’t you mean Granny?’”

Mr Morton continues: “Unsurprisingly, Harry was not slow to join the teasing of his older brother.

“When William said once that he would like to be a policeman and look after his mother, Harry told him emphatically: ‘You can’t, you have to be King.’”

Broadcaster Jeremy Paxman, in his documentary “Paxman on the Queen’s Children”, which aired in February 2019, also recalled Princess Diana talking to him about her son’s futures.

He said: “We talked about our children and she said William often told her that he didn’t really want to be king, and then Harry would say, ‘If you don’t want the job I’ll have it’.”

For his part, Prince Charles reflected on his dawning awareness as a child that he would one day be king.

In a 1969 radio interview, he said: “I didn’t just wake up in my pram one day and say ‘Yippee!’

“I think it just dawns on you slowly, that people are interested, and slowly you get the idea that you have a certain duty and responsibility.”

This year, William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, revealed that they have chosen to keep Prince George’s status as future king a secret from the five-year-old for now.

William spoke about his desire to give the prince a normal family upbringing, saying: “I love my children in the same way any father does, and I hope George loves me the same any son does to his father. We are very normal in that sense.”

He told the BBC in 2016: “There’ll be a time and a place to bring George up and understand how he fits in, in the world. But right now it’s just a case of keeping a secure, stable environment around him and showing as much love as I can as a father.”
