The ‘crack den’ estate where kids can’t play due to people having sex outside
New Mexico: Drugs linked to deadly 2021 balloon crash
People living in an estate in Middlesbrough are frightened to leave their homes due to “crack dens” and prostitution on their streets.
A council meeting was held to discuss the problems on the Newport estate last week with police and partner agencies to raise awareness.
Residents told TeesideLive that they have “had enough”, with a man recently having been hit with a metal pole and another bitten by a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
Issues in the area reportedly include public sex acts, abandoned drug paraphernalia and excrement outside homes.
One woman said: “What about the decent people living here? The kids can’t play out because of needles and condoms on the grass.

“The drug dealing is terrible and the prostitution is still bad, it’s all around. A bloke down the road was walking his dog and a woman said do you want business. He said: ‘No. I’m just walking my dog!’
“I’m scared of the dark nights and am worried that old people are going to get robbed. It’s absolutely terrible – but residents are all standing up now. They have had enough.”
A 63-year-old who has lived in the area for three years said things have gone “from bad to worse”.
She said: “It wasn’t too bad at first but now we have people banging on the doors, and we’ve had obscene drawings on the door too. I live on my own and I am vulnerable.

“I’ve had my door booted in, I’ve had to get myself a camera and put a light outside the door. My sister lives around the corner but we are frightened to come out and go home at night. You’re frightened in case someone grabs you.”
Cleveland Police District Commander for Middlesbrough, Superintendent Marc Anderson, said the force is working closely with partners and has been carrying out plain-clothed patrols.
According to police, in recent months 32 people have been jailed for drug offences in the Newport estate area. There was also 30 percent less crime in August 2023 than in August 2022.
Partner agency Thirteen has removed seating and shrubbery to “discourage people from congregating” and put up secure alley gates to reduce burglaries.
