Terror suspect guilty of possessing weapons but cleared of 'killing spree' plans

A man has been found guilty under the Terrorism Act of possessing weapons but was cleared of a charge involving wanting to ‘carry out a spree killing.’

The trial of Gabrielle Friel has concluded at the High Court in Edinburgh and the jury has delivered it verdicts.

Friel, 22, was found guilty by majority of having a crossbow, scope, crossbow arrows, a machete and a ballistic vest at various locations in Edinburgh between June 1 and August 16 last year.

The jury found that the allegation that he prepared for terrorist acts by conducting online research in relation to spree killings during this time was not proven.

It was alleged Friel had expressed affinity with and sympathy for mass murder inspired by an ‘involuntary celibate’ (incel) ideology.

This online subculture is made up of men who define themselves as unable to find a romantic or sexual partner despite desiring one.
