Princess Anne admitted that she had hidden in a horsebox to keep her early relationship with now ex-husband Captain Mark Phillips hidden. The Princess Royal was “terrified” of her blossoming romance capturing the attention of the world’s media, according to commentators. The former couple’s journey to marriage was discussed on Channel 5 documentary, ‘Princess Anne: The 7 Loves Of Her Life’.

Royal author Tom Quinn told viewers: “Princess Anne was terrified that her relationship with Mark Phillips would be discovered, exposed, written about in detail.

“I don’t think it’s putting it too strongly.

“I think the reason for that was that she knew that he was the one.”

Narrator Phoebe Pryce added: “To avoid being discovered, she even admitted to hiding in Mark’s horsebox with her typically dry humour.”

The Princess Royal had spoken about the experience while appearing on Michael Parkinson’s Network 10 show ‘Parkinson in Australia’.

The host asked her: “Was it enjoyable being in a horsebox, ma’am?”

Anne replied: “Well, I’ve been a much better driver of horses ever since.”

Mr Parkinson, Mark and the audience burst into laughter at the quip.

Mr Quinn told Channel 5: “She was always quite happy to lie to the press if it meant protecting her private life.”

In one archive clip, Anne confirmed that it has been a “strain” to keep the relationship a secret from the press.

By May 1973, the rumours and denial were over and the couple announced their engagement.

The Queen Mother reportedly called them “the perfect couple”.

Six months later, on November 14, the Princess became the first of the Queen’s children to wed.

Daily Mail Editor-at-Large Richard Kay gave further insight: “Both Anne and Mark were hugely private, but they instantly became one of the world’s most famous couples.

“He was beginning a public life, which he hadn’t really countenanced for himself.

“He sort of reconciled himself to the fact that he was marrying the woman he loved, and he would just have to make the best of it.”
