Temperatures could hit 17°C by the weekend after record-breaking freeze

The freezing weather conditions are finally set to come to an end with temperatures set to rise to a ‘spring-like’ warmth.

Snow and ice is set to disappear for most across the UK this week – but flood alerts remain in some low-lying areas.

The Met Office says the milder weather will begin from today, with temperatures finally reaching double figures with highs of up to 13°C in England and Wales.

And by the weekend this will rise further to 17°C – temperatures usually seen in the spring.

Met Office forecaster Luke Miall said the weather will be ‘quite wet and windy’ for most of the week.

‘We will be hovering between 7°C to 12°C, I suspect, through Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,’ he added.

‘Most of the snow will start melting early in the week, with the exception being Scotland because they have had so much of it.’

Six flood warnings, meaning ‘immediate action is required’ are in force across the East and North East of England, as well as 66 less severe flood alerts.

It comes after the UK recorded its coldest night in more than two decades as temperatures dropped below -20°C last week.

The lowest recording early on Thursday morning was in Braemar, with temperatures at -22.9°C, followed by Kinbrace at -21.2°C and Balmoral at -20°C.

The Met Office said this is the coldest temperature recorded in Britain since 1995.

The forecaster tweeted: ‘The last time minus 20°C was recorded in the UK was December 23, 2010.’

Large swathes of the country were covered in snow leading into the weekend, with Scotland seeing the heaviest snowfall.

Weather warnings were issued by forecasters due to power cuts and travel disruption, and some communities were even completely cut off by the snow.

The lowest temperature ever recorded in the UK is -27.2°C, in both Altanaharra in February 1895 and December 1995, and in Braemar in January 1982.
