Teenagers run riot in Manchester city centre as they hurl eggs at police

Hundreds of teenagers are rampaging through Manchester City centre, bringing public transport to a standstill.

Trams have been suspended after a wave of kids ran through Piccadilly Gardens, after finishing school for the summer.

Services are not running through Market Street or Shudehill Metrolink stations.

Manchester Metrolink tweeted: “Due to an incident near Market Street/Piccadilly Gardens, all services are running via Exchange Square.

“No services will operate through Market Street or Shudehill.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused to your journey.”

Several hundred teenagers had gathered in Piccadilly Gardens, as they celebrated the end of term.

According to MEN reporter Ethan Davies, a man with a boombox started playing music to loud cheers from the high spirited teens.

Police then asked the man to stop using the speaker, which prompted an angry reaction from the partying school kids.

Officers were pelted with eggs and had milkshakes thrown at them, forcing them to take cover.

In a tweet Mr Davies wrote: “It appears that eggs are being thrown from the Market Street tram stop, causing teenagers to scatter in multiple directions.

“From what I can tell, the half-dozen police officers are trying to find the egg thrower.

“It’s chaotic here, to be honest.”

Shop owners have locked their doors and placed security guards outside to try and protect their properties.

Pat Karney, a local councillor, has condemned the rioters, saying people could be injured.

He said: “Not in the least funny and could injure people .We will check our cctv cameras and the tram stop cameras.

“We will throw the books at them if we identify them.”
