Teenager's horrific sunburn injuries despite wearing cream

A teenager has shared gruesome images of her heavily blistered sunburn she received after just one hour in the sun on holiday, despite wearing sun lotion.

Maisie Squires, 16, suffered extensive and severe burns to her entire back as a result of a snorkelling expedition while on holiday in Cuba.

The girl from Leeds ended up with blisters bigger than golf balls, despite covering herself in sun lotion before going out into the Caribbean sun.

She then suffered a nine-hour flight back to the UK with the blisters on her back the following day.

Maisie posted the stomach-churning pictures to her Facebook, adding a reminder to her friends of the importance of sun protection.

She wrote: ‘So mind how swollen and disgusting my back looks, but this is what my sunburn turned into this morning just before a nine hour flight back home to England So shocked! A&E it is! (wear suncream).

‘I was snorkelling for one hour and my back was showing, but I didn’t realise my back was burning and I did wear suncream.

‘I’ve blistered like that because the sun was very hot in Cuba on Tuesday and I have very fair skin.’

In the pictures which have since gone viral, Maisie’s back is very visibly swollen and red, with black and white crusted patches surrounding four large blisters.

Two of the biggest blisters were filled with a yellow liquid and were so large they can be seen from under Maisie’s clothes, causing her issues when sitting down.

In another photo shared two of the blisters have popped but the black marks and burns on her sore back have darkened.

The weather in the Cuban capital of Havana hit around 33C on Tuesday, which was similar to the temperature in parts of the UK due to the ongoing heatwave.

However, sunburn is caused by UV rays which are far more severe in Cuba than they are in the UK, according to their UV index scores.

On the scale which runs from one to 12, Britain rarely sees UV index scores higher than eight. However, Cuba regularly sees scores of 11 and 12.

Her post was shared more than 10,000 times and received thousands of comments, many of which urged her to seek urgent medical attention.

Speaking today, Maisie confirmed she had been seen by A&E upon her arrival in the UK and had been treated.

She said: ‘The blisters on my back are still very sore and I still cannot sit back or lay down on my back.

‘I did not get them removed or anything as the hospital said to me that they will just have to pop on their own.’
