Teenagers charged after Leo Durrington, 3, left in a critical condition by hit-and-run

Leo Durrington was struck by a stolen white Ford Transit Connect van in Leigh, Greater Manchester, on Tuesday morning.

The vehicle was being chased by police at the time.

After providing first aid to the youngster while waiting for paramedics and an air to ambulance arrive, officers tracked down the van to Abram in Wigan and later arrested the teenagers, aged 16 and 15.

The 16-year-old has been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, handling stolen goods, failing to stop at the scene of a collision and failing to report a collision, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.

The 15-year-old has been charged with allowing himself to be carried in a stolen motor vehicle.

The boys, who cannot be named for legal reasons, are due to appear at Wigan Youth Court on Thursday morning, and Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said the incident had been referred to its professional standards branch “in line with normal force policy”.

Leo remains in a critical condition in hospital.
