Teenager, 17, charged with murder after man stabbed to death with screwdriver

A 17-year-old had been charged with the murder of Peter Duncan, 52, who was stabbed with a screwdriver in Newcastle on Wednesday, Northumbria Police said.

He will appear in court on Monday.

Mr Duncan was taken to hospital, but died later as a result of his injuries.

Police said there had been a ‘coming together’ at the entrance of a busy shopping centre, which led to Mr Duncan being fatally injured from a single puncture wound.

Officers believe the weapon used was a screwdriver.

Mr Duncan’s family said in a statement: ‘Peter was a kind and caring man who was always first to help others.

‘He was a devoted father, husband, son, brother, uncle and friend and loved by all who knew him.

‘His death will leave such a huge hole in our lives and he’ll be deeply missed by us all.’

Businesses and shoppers were evacuated from the busy city centre square as police closed off the area.
