Teenage killer Leighton Amies detained for 12 years over Tomasz Oleszak murder
A teenager that murdered another 14-year-old boy has been detained for a minimum of 12 years. Leighton Amies, 14 at the time of the attack, fatally stabbed Tomasz Oleszak in the chest on October 3 2022.
The prosecutor said Amies, who denied intentionally killing the boy, let out “a boast” when he shouted “I’ve wetted your boy” following the attack.
The murder weapon was a steak knife, that Amies said he had on him for “reassurance”.
Amies is to be on licence for the rest of his life, according to Judge Mr Justice Martin Spencer.
Tomasz’s stab wound was 8cm deep and he died in hospital the day after the incident.
Kamila Wisniewska, Tomasz’s mother, said the whole family were “utterly devastated” by the murder and that their lives has been ripped apart.
She described her son in glowing terms, saying he “was not a fighter” but her “hero” who “hated violence”.
She added: “He was the most beautiful boy with good manners and respect for life.”
She says his bedroom is still untouched from the day he died.
The teenager, during the hearing, was told: “Knowing you had the knife you were happy to fight them. With your interest in and knowledge of knives, you relished this fight.”
The judge noted that Amies was not the instigator, and that others “will have to live with the knowledge their stupidity” led to the death.
But, the judge also added, that the “principal responsibility” lay with Amies for “taking a knife and being prepared to use it”.
