Paramedics rushed to Kaimes School, which is in Liberton, Edinburgh, to provide medical aid to the 17-year-old boy but he died at the scene at around 11.30am yesterday (Tuesday January 25). Police were also called to the school, which caters for those with complex needs on the autism spectrum, and now understand there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

It’s believed teachers made the calls to emergency services but it has not yet been confirmed the boy was a pupil at the school.

The school will be closed for at least the rest of the week, reports Edinburgh Live.

Support is now being offered to pupils affected by the incident.

Amanda Hatton, executive director of education and children’s services at the City of Edinburgh Council, said: “I am absolutely saddened to hear this tragic news and my immediate thoughts are with the family.

“My heartfelt sympathies go out to the school community and everyone who has been affected. Support is being offered to any pupils or staff who may require it.”

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Around 11:30am on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, police responded to a concern for a person call at a school on Lasswade Road, Edinburgh.

“Medical assistance was provided by paramedics to a 17-year-old boy, however, he died at the scene.

“There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

Kaimes School, which is in a suburb in the southeast of the Scottish capital, has been recognised for its work by the National Autistic Society.

The tragedy comes after two pupils at a school in central Bristol died in the same week.
