Hayley Burton, 33, offered to be a surrogate for her sister Laura Knight and her husband, David, as her sibling has Mayer Tokitansky Küster Hauser syndrome and was born without a uterus. The condition affects around one in 5,000 women. But Laura has become a mother through her sister’s selfless act and was baby Noah’s first ‘skin to skin’ contact when he was born on January 10 at Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley.
Laura told BirminghamLive: “I can’t put into words how lucky and grateful we are for Noah and for what Hayley has done, there are just no words, she is just incredible.
“He’s changed our whole life, we never knew there was anything missing from our life. Now, he was the missing piece.
“We never knew there was a gap until he filled it. It’s like he’s always been here, we can’t imagine life without him now.
“He’s so content. He’s a little dream. He’s a little miracle he is.”
She added: “Hayley absolutely adores him, she sees him most days. She helps me out and we go out for coffee.
“She’s made us a family. She very much feels like he’s her nephew, she loves him and will always have a bond with him.
“But it’s very much: ‘He’s Laura and David’s baby and I just carried him to help them be a family'”.
Describing the birth, Laura recalled: “He was welcomed into the world at 6.30pm. It was all very, very quick.
“When the men arrived with our stuff, Hayley was pretty much ready to push.
“Rich [Hayley’s husband] was there comforting her, she closed the curtains and just allowed us all to be there, she never said a word.
“It was just fabulous, it was the best experience ever.”
She added: “The baby was handed straight to me for skin to skin on my chest and my husband cut the cord. We had our little moment while Hayley was trying to deliver the placenta.

“Noah was just staring at me and David and we tried to show him Hayley but she was contracting still to try and get the placenta out.”
She remembered the day taking a darker turn, as “that night it was bittersweet, my sister was in the bed ill and I had a newborn baby, but the staff were amazing in high dependency.
“Yes my baby was here and safe, but I was still concerned because Hayley had so much blood loss.”
But Hayley recovered, and Laura said: “The next day she got out of bed, we had a few pictures, she held Noah, she really helped me.”
When they left the hospital, Laura remembered all the family in tears, “the lads and the kids were all waiting outside maternity and me and Hayley left with him in his car chair.”
After delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, one of Laura’s embryos was fertilised with David’s sperm and inserted into Hayley.
Laura described the life-changing surrogacy as a dream come true and encouraged anyone with the condition to look into their options.
She said: “I would urge anybody who is waiting for treatment and they think time is ticking on to go and have an initial consultation with a private clinic.
“We didn’t think we would be able to afford it, we thought we would be paying for it for the rest of our life and that’s just for one, but actually it’s not.
“I think if it’s really something you want then you’ll save and you’ll work hard to get the outcome and that’s what we did.”
She estimated the total cost of the treatment to be around £17,000.
