This is the heartwarming moment a police officer gives a sobbing young man a hug after he was ‘feeling overwhelmed’.

Footage shows the police deputy checking on the driver after he stopped at the side of the road in Michigan, US.

The man, called ‘Joe’ to protect his identity, was sitting behind the wheel of his car in visible distress when he was approached by the officers.

One officer asks what he can do to help. ‘Joe’ replies he ‘could use a hug’ before bursting into tears.

The cops, who identify themselves as Jake and Fred, offer to get him someone to talk to, with the man explaining that he is ‘too stressed’.

They agree to call his mother and discuss mental health counselling. One of the offers also offers himself as someone to talk to if ‘Joe’ ever needs it.

‘Joe’ thanks the officers before the footage ends with the officers wishing him a nice day as they leave the scene.

Macomb County Sheriff’s Office released the footage with a statement that read: ‘I have learned that there is more power in a good strong hug than in a thousand meaningful words.’

The police explained: ‘A few days ago, Deputy Thorne was called to a vehicle that was sitting on the side of the road.

‘Joe explained that he was headed to work and had to pull over because he was feeling down and just needed a break.

‘He didn’t want to hurt himself. He was upset and had multiple stressful issues making him feel overwhelmed. Deputy Thorne asked what he could do to help, and Joe simply responded that he could use a hug. That was all. A hug.’

They said during the hug Joe was able to ‘release some emotional tears’.

‘For the next twenty minutes, Deputy Thorne and Deputy Parisek, both military veterans, sat with Joe and exchanged some stories, helpful remedies, encouragement, and even a laugh at the end.

‘Please remember that we are all human. We all have good days, bad days, and days that we feel we might not make it through. But you can. Never be afraid to reach out and make that phone call to hear a helpful voice on the other end.’
