Sussex shock: Meghan and Harry’s ‘future role for monarchy revealed’

Meghan and Harry’s future outside of the Royal Family beyond March 31 is uncertain. Fans know the couple will be spending the majority of their time in North America, will not be using their HRH titles and have completely dropped their brand name, Sussex Royal. However, the two intend to become financially independent over the next year which has raised fears that the crown will become commercialised in the process.

However, speaking on the BBC’s Business Daily programme back in January, a financial expert pointed out a new avenue for the couple.

Chief Executive of Brand Finance David Haigh explained how, as long as their exit is handled smoothly, the two could become ambassadors for Britain.

He said: “If it’s handled in a mature kind of way, and the Palace takes a breath and thinks about it constructively, it is possible, particularly in the US and in other parts of the world, that they could actually be good ambassadors for Britain.”

He explained how firstly, they have to be careful of hypocrisy.

Mr Haigh explained: “They want to benefit from the royal protection from the household, the travel and all this kind of stuff, and be paid to do that kind of thing, while running their own private lives and choosing what they want to do and making money commercially.

“That’s where I think people find a problem.

“If they were to say, look we are stepping back and not taking anything from the state, people would respect them for it, and probably that’s where it’s going to end up.”

BBC host Manuela Sargosa said: “So you’re thinking that Prince Harry and Meghan could continue to be an asset to the monarchy in that way, in soft power, even if they aren’t senior royals?”

He responded: “Yes they certainly could be, if it’s handled the right way.”

Ms Sargosa pointed out how it’s a fine line as to what occupation you can take up, even as a minor royal, without damaging the brand.

Yet Mr Haigh explained how Prince Charles had set up two different brand names, Duchy Originals and Highgroves, both of which sold a whole range of products.

However, although there was potential for Megxit to “work out for Britain”, Mr Haigh remarked that “it doesn’t look like it’s going in the right way so far” back in January.

Furthermore, in the months since the BBC podcast, Harry and Meghan’s relationship with the rest of the Royal Family seems to have deteriorated further, as the Queen has insisted on a “hard Megxit”.

After several statements released from both the Sussex household and Buckingham Palace which appeared to reveal antagonism between the two houses, the Queen did invite Harry to have a heart-to-heart upon his return to the UK to smooth things over.

The details of their discussion are unclear, and Meghan and Harry still found themselves snubbed in the Commonwealth Day service by Harry’s grandmother.

She did not permit the controversial couple to walk in behind the Queen along with the rest of the senior royals.

While Prince William and Kate Middleton deliberately chose not to walk in with the Queen either to show solidarity with the Sussexes, there were still clear tensions between the two couples.

Additionally a hoax phone call which was recently leaked revealed how Harry believed he and his wife are “completely separate from the majority of my family”.
