A SURVEYOR who glassed a man in a “nasty and serious assault” on a nightclub dancefloor has been spared jail.

Roland George (34) struck the man’s head with a pint beer glass during a heated row in a city centre club.

The incident left the man – a medical professional – with a 2mm laceration on the back of his head.

George was ordered to carry out 160 hours of community service to avoid six months in jail.

Judge Michael Walsh said the assault was “nasty, unprovoked and serious”.

George, of Galloping Green, Stillorgan Road, Blackrock, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm.

When his case came before Dublin District Court for finalisation, the judge was told George had paid €1,000 compensation to the man.

Michael French, defending, asked Judge Walsh to leave his client, who had no previous convictions, without a criminal record.

The judge refused, given the seriousness of the assault.

He said it was “fortunate” that George was not facing a more serious charge.

The court was told previously that gardai were called to Dicey’s at the Russell Court Hotel last September 1.

They were told the accused had hit his victim with a pint glass.

Mr French said his client was apologetic and the incident was “very uncharacteristic”.

He said George had drunk too much and what happened was a “rush of blood to the head”.

The victim was described as a “very quiet individual” who rarely went out and was “taken aback” by what had happened.

However, he did not suffer any serious injury and bore no ill-will to the accused, said the prosecuting garda.
