A new poll has shown the number of people who back the Royal Family is lower than the figure recorded in a similar survey last October. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex sent shockwaves through the Firm when they claimed an unnamed royal had made racist remarks about the skin colour of their son Archie before he was born.

In the interview with Oprah, broadcast on ITV on Monday, Harry, 36, also said he felt hurt when his family failed to condemn racist stories and messages about Meghan in the media and on social media.

Now, as the family reels from what has been dubbed “the worst royal crisis in 85 years”, their support has dived.

In a YouGov poll, 63 percent of respondents said they would like to see the monarch remain – a drop of four points since a similar ballot was carried out five months ago.

And calls for an elected head of state grew louder as 25 percent – up four percentage points – said they would like to see the monarchy replaced by such a system.

Just 12 percent said they didn’t know.

Of those who voted Conservative in the last general election, 85 percent backed the Queen and her family, while the figure for Labour voters was 48 percent.

Social media users were quick to wade into the debate over the results.

One man who described himself as a socialist said anyone who told themselves the monarchy is here to stay is in denial.

He tweeted: “Probably the general direction is it is gradually going to go as older people die… if you can’t see that – you’re in denial.”

But a second person said the royals were among the nation’s most finest assets and should be allowed to remain.

The person said: “You couldn’t imagine Britain without a monarchy.

“It is our great asset. Renowned the world over.”

Others turned the conversation to who would be elected as a head of state if the monarch was done away with.

One said: “I hate to think who people would vote in as UK head of state.”

A second wrote: “They would at best be a successful politician who retires into the post, so Blair, Thatcher.

“At worst, they would be a party loyalist, the type we used to appoint to EU Commissioner roles, so Lady Ashton or Lord Hill. They would be Tory or Labour almost definitely.”

The fallout from Harry and Meghan’s interview continued this week as royals tried to carry on as normal.

The Queen appeared at an online event to mark British Science Week and struck a light-hearted tone when she joked around with guests.

She was asked about her 1961 meeting with cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin after he became the first man to go into space.

When pressed for details about what he was like in person, the Queen made everyone laugh by replying: “Russian.”

The YouGov survey was carried out on March 8 and 9. A total of 1,672 adults in Britain took part.
