Sturgeon stunned as Iain Dale tells her she ‘made case for Brexit’ in independence speech

The LBC host Iain Dale was grilling the SNP chief during an event at the Edinburgh Fringe. Iain Dale: All Talk at the Gilded Balloon saw him interview the first Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon. During the interview, the outspoken Remainer pushed again for an independent Scotland to which Mr Dale argued back that her reasons for independence were tantamount to those of Brexiteers. Ms Sturgeon argued the benefits would be “being in charge of our own future and being free to make mistakes and learn from them” an argument Brexiteers have used to convince others of Brexit.

The First Minister said: “I think the case for Independence is entirely an optimistic one.

“It is about being in charge of our own futures, about making our own luck.

“Owning our own mistakes and learning from them.”

Mr Dale interrupted to say: “You’re making the case for Brexit.”

Ms Sturgeon denied this and continued: “No I don’t think that is true.

“Because every single country in the EU, rather every member state, is an independent country.

“They don’t stop being independent because they are members of the EU.

“If you look at Ireland right now, getting influence disproportionate to its size because of its membership to the EU.

“Compared to Scotland within the UK union, we are being completely ignored and disregarded.

“I think the contrast there couldn’t be any clearer.

“But the point I was going to make is the one that is not fashionable in the current political era.

“I’m a fully paid up believer in the power of optimism in politics but there is a line between optimism and delusion.

“Notably, selling people something that is not true.

“I think that is where the Brexit argument has made the mistake and Boris Johnson in particular.

“He shrugs his shoulders quite literally when you talk to him about the consequences of crashing out at the end of October with no deal.

“As if they don’t matter or he can wish them away.”

Mr Dale argued back that Ms Sturgeon does the same thing with Scottish independence.

He said: “You do the same.

“The consequences of Scotland withdrawing from the union with the rest of the United Kingdom could be equally catastrophic.”

Nicola Sturgeon re-emphasised that she did not concur with the idea before arguing that her team had compiled data regarding independence.
