Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-serving monarch, has featured in every single UK banknote since 1960. The Queen’s face started to appear on £1 notes in an image created by the banknote designer Robert Austin. There are reportedly 4.5billion sterling banknotes in circulation with the Queen’s face on them, worth a total £80 billion.

The clip shows the Queen’s evolution throughout the seven decades she served as Britain’s monarch. The very first portrait of the monarch was depicted on coins and was taken by Mary Gillick. It was adopted at the beginning of her reign in 1953.

The most recent was taken by Jody Clark and introduced in 2015. After the Queen’s death on Thursday, coins, and banknotes bearing the monarch’s portrait will slowly fade away to leave room for her successor, King Charles III.

It is expected that King Charles will sit for a new portrait to be featured on all coins, notes, and stamps after he formally rises to the throne.

According to The Guardian, the process of replacing the banknotes featuring the late Queen will be a lengthy one and could take two years.

The Royal Mint, which is in charge of manufacturing and issuing the UK’s coins, has paid tributes to Her Majesty in a statement, reading: “Queen Elizabeth II ruled with heart and devotion, and will be dearly missed by all of us at The Royal Mint and by millions of people around the world.

“The remarkable legacy of Britain’s longest-serving monarch will live on for many years to come.”

During the process, Britain’s official marker of the UK coin will send recommendations to the Chancellor and obtain royal approval. According to the Mirror, final choices are given the green light by the Chancellor and the King.

As the heir to the throne, King Charles will become the next monarch. Charles and his wife, Camilla, will return to London from Balmoral to address the nation after holding an audience with the new Prime Minister Liz Truss.

The new King and Queen Consort travelled to Balmoral, Scotland, with the Queen’s children and grandchildren on Thursday after her Majesty’s doctors became concerned about her health.

She died peacefully in the afternoon.

In a statement, the King said: “The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.”
