Streatham terror attack: Should terrorists be refused early release from prison? VOTE HERE

Sudesh Amman, who was jailed in 2018 for possession of terrorist documents and disseminating terrorist publications, was shot dead by police yesterday after he went on the rampage with a stolen 10-inch knife on a busy London street. Amman had previously praised the bloodthirsty ISIS militant group, shared an online al-Qaeda magazine and encouraged his girlfriend to behead her parents.

It is right that these individuals are kept behind bars

His attack shared similarities with last November’s London Bridge attack when freed jihadist Usman Khan launched a knife attack at offender rehabilitation conference in Fishmongers’ Hall and killed two caseworkers before being disarmed by members of the public and shot dead by police.

Mr Johnson said the Government would announce fundamental changes to the system for dealing with those convicted of terrorism offences.

Home Secretary Priti Patel said: ”Those measures will build upon the actions we have already put in place.

“There will be legislation to end the early release from prison of counter-terrorism offenders. It is right that these individuals are kept behind bars.”

Former head of UK counter-terrorism policing Sir Mark Rowley said there was a “case” for giving terrorists indeterminate prison sentences.

But he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that they should also be given rehabilitation and de-radicalisation support so they can change their ways.

Sir Mark said: ”If someone is clearly driven by an ideology and they believe that slaughtering other people is a sort of God-given purpose, then I can see a case for that.”

He continued: “As long as we put alongside it the rehabilitation and de-radicalisation programmes to give someone the opportunity to change their ways and be released.

“I don’t think there should be a lock-up-and-throw-away-the key – we need to be as equally aggressive about trying to help people turn their lives around as we are determined to protect the public.”

Sir Mark warned that there will be more “dangerous people” on the UK’s streets being released from prisons with terrorism convictions than returning from Syria.

He said: “That seems to be what’s happening at the moment.

“One of the challenges for the Prime Minister and his team is how much he can look back and amend the rules for people already serving sentences.

“Legally that’s very, very difficult. But if there are many, many coming out on regimes that we no longer think work, is it possible to change that?

“Otherwise police and security services are going to have many, many more cases that they are prioritising.”
