Stranger seduces woman on train before stealing her £8k engagement ring at home

A man who seduced a stranger who was wearing an £8,000 Tiffany engagement ring has been jailed for three months. Matthew Green, 44, struck up conversation with the woman while they were both on a train going from London to Glasgow.

The lengthy journey gave them opportunity to enjoy some drinks together before sharing a taxi from Glasgow Central Station to her Lanarkshire home where they formed a “brief relationship”.

The woman, who has not been named, saw Green leaving her property but when she awoke she discovered her designer ring had been swiped and police were called in, reports GlasgowLive.

A train ticket belonging to Green was found and officers contacted colleagues in his hometown of Aberdeen with information.

Police also alerted pawn shops which led to him being snared when he tried to sell it in a Cash Converters. Green, of Aberdeen, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court and admitted the theft of July this year.

Depute fiscal John Coogan said: “The accused boarded the train at Carlisle and both struck up conversation and consumed alcohol for the remainder of the journey. Both entered a local taxi and travelled to where the witness resides and continued consuming alcohol until both fell asleep.

“The witness woke from her sleep as the accused was in the process of leaving and she returned to sleep but later that morning she noted her £8,000 Tiffany engagement ring was missing. She contacted police and a train ticket belonging to the accused indicating his ultimate destination was Aberdeen.”

The prosecutor added: “Later that day the accused and another female entered Cash Converters attempting to sell the Tiffany engagement ring and police were contacted. The ring was thereafter returned to the woman after checks were made on the serial number.”

Jim O’Dowd, defending, said Green had wanted to return the ring and deliberately went to the Cash Converters to get caught.

He added: “He was approached by this woman and they entered into a conversation and that developed into something more and he ended up spending the night with the complainer at her house. He did form a relationship with her albeit for a few hours and he tells me he had taken quite a bit to drink.

“He was at pains that this ring was returned to the woman and he went to this shop so it could be returned and he would be seen and seized. He regrets this happening and he is happy that there was full recovery.”

Sheriff Colin Dunipace told Green there was no alternative to prison.
