Storm Dudley on the way? Met Office issues warning over incoming gales and snow

Storm Dudley could bring snow and 90mph winds to parts of the country this week.

The Met Office is keeping an eye on an incoming weather front which could grow in strength and become a named storm.

Residents in the north of England and Scotland are being told to brace themselves for the adverse weather, which is expected to hit on Wednesday.

A yellow weather warning for wind was put in place last week for parts of Northern Ireland, most of Scotland and the north of England.

But now the Met Office has said those warnings could be moved up a level, meaning there is a serious risk of disruption in places.

If it does become a named weather event, it will be dubbed ‘Storm Dudley’, the third of the year so far.

Meteorologist Tom Morgan said: ‘This whole week is going to see quite a disturbed weather pattern developing across the UK.

’Western parts of Scotland look like bearing the brunt of the strongest winds, where we could see gusts of 80mph to 90mph on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

‘That’s strong enough to bring some quite widespread disruption, and it’s an area of the country that’s seen several named storms this winter season already.’

The high winds are expected to land mid-week, with a weather system moving in on Wednesday evening bringing in severe gales and storm force winds to a region spanning the Orkney Islands to Yorkshire and Lancashire.

Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England could also see snow, with warnings potentially being put in place over the next few days.

The forecaster continued: ‘And the bad wintery weather was not just for the northern parts of the UK.

‘The southern parts of England and Wales will see their turn. It looks very, very windy in the south at this stage for Friday.’

‘There could be some quite widespread travel disruption in parts of the UK through this week.’

He added: ‘All parts of the UK will see some very strong winds at times.

‘It’s Scotland and the North’s turn on Wednesday and into Thursday, and then it’s probably going to be the southern parts of England and Wales that will see the very strongest winds on Friday.’
