Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were called to the site of the incident at 7.30pm. A spokesman said: “We have three appliances in St Michael’s Road.”
One local told StokeonTrentLive: “About an hour ago my partner heard an explosion or smash.
“We went outside about 25 minutes ago and see this.
“There are several fire engines here.”

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said they were “unable” to provide further detail for now “due to the nature of the incident”.
A spokesperson added: “The police will be providing statements.
“The incident is ongoing at this time.”
The incident followed an earlier blaze in Stoke-on-Trent this afternoon, with emergency crews from Longton and Hanley tackling a fire on Sutherland Road in Longton.
Staffordshire Police and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene, where they found a “large quantity” of rags and wood up in flames, just before 3pm.
The fire is believed to have been caused by the explosion of an aerosol can.
Three hose reel jets were used to try and extinguish the flames. No one has been reported injured.
A spokesperson said: “Firefighters were called at 2.38pm to Sutherland Road in Longton following reports of a fire in an alleyway.
“They found a large quantity of rags and wood on fire.”
A Staffordshire Police spokesperson said: “Police were called at 2.57pm on Tuesday (16 August) to Sutherland Road in Longton following reports of an accidental fire.
“A rubbish fire had spread, believed to be as a result of an aerosol can exploding.”
