Columnist Owen Jones clashed with Pimlico Plumbers founder Charlie Mullins after he argued many workers in the UK are “proper lazy people” who “don’t want to go to work”. In light of the remarks, Mr Jones shut down the Pimlico Plumbers founder pointing out he was himself “still working from home”. He added “you complain about British workers working from home, but you’re always at home every time you’re on this show”. Mr Jones concluded stressing only last year over 3.8 million workers did “lots of overtime” without being paid.
Speaking on the Jeremy Vine show, Mr Jones told Pimlico Plumbers founder: “I don’t agree with anything.
“Charlie, you’re still working from home, as per usual?”
As Mr Mullins attempted to interrupt, Mr Jones said: “You could keep speaking over me, but I’m not going to stop speaking.
“You come a lot to the show to complain about British workers working from home, but you’re always at home every time you’re on this show.
“Last year, 3.8 million workers did unpaid work in this country, they were not paid for the overtime that they did.
“This is a country that has one of the lowers levels of statutory sick pay in the whole of the developed world, people go to work ill in this country because they cannot afford to take time off.”
He argued: “This is a country with some of the lowest benefits in the whole Europe.
“You look at Scandinavia, the level of unemployment benefits and social security is much higher, and yet they have more people in the job market than we do.
“You’re saying all of a sudden now we don’t have all these European workers here and people aren’t taking jobs, not true.
“We’ve got near full employment in this country.
“It’s just people are in precarious and unpaid jobs where they’re not paid properly.
“We have an overworked workforce in Britain, lots of unpaid and getting paid too little.”

The comments came as Mr Mullins said: “A lot of people don’t want to go to work, and we’ve got some proper lazy people out there.
“When you suggest to youngsters through an apprenticeship, they don’t want to know because they’ve got money coming in from their family.
“They’ve got all the luxury of spending so they’re not prepared to do it.
“Things have changed massively over the last 30 or 40 years, and we’re in a terrible position for it”.
According to the Office of National Statistics, January to March 2022 estimates showed “a decrease in the unemployment rate”, resulting in an increase in the employment rates when compared with the previous three-month period from October to December 2021.
From 1971 until 2022 employment rate in the UK averaged 71.52 percent, the ONS said.
According to ONS, around one in seven working adults worked from home between 27 April and May 2022.
When Government guidance to work from home due to the pandemic was lifted, the percentage of employees working exclusively from home fell significantly.
When asked about future plans, more than 8 in 10 workers who had to work from home during the pandemic said they planned to work hybrid.
