The Labour leader challenged the Government to bring forward the August 16 date in England to match that in Wales, which is currently August 7. Sir Keir said: “This has been a summer of chaos for British businesses and British families. The Tory government has never been able to explain the logic of their self-isolation rules and has just repeated the same mistakes over and over again.

“While the British public has been trying to do the right thing, we saw this government’s instincts when Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak tried to avoid the isolation millions have had to endure.

“The government’s slapdash approach to this global pandemic is crippling our economy and creating real problems for businesses and families alike.

“Welsh Labour has shown what can be done and it’s time for the Tories to do the same.”

It has been suggested that Labour leader Sir Keir has now contradicted himself, after arguing in Parliament in mid-July that it was “reckless” to remove all coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

Sir Keir said: “Labour does not support the government’s plan.
“Lifting all restrictions at once is reckless, and doing so when the Johnson variant is already out of control risks a summer of chaos.”

Many Twitter users reacted to Sir Keir’s comments by suggesting he has been contradicting himself.

One outraged user tweeted: “Hold up, he was telling Parliament last week that the unlock on the 19th was ‘reckless’.

“Flops round like a fish out of water.”

Another Twitter user stated: “Yet labour has been moaning for weeks the government is rushing ahead too quickly.

“They really can’t make up their minds.”

A third said: “This guy is lost.

“Two weeks ago he said we were headed into a summer of chaos because of ‘skyrocketing Covid cases’.”

While another said: “I thought he was against lifting restrictions?

“Does Labour actually have a consistent policy on anything?”

UK officials have suggested it now “remains too early to say” if the current wave of coronavirus infections in England is stabilising.

It comes as Covid cases in the previous week have been down – despite the UK fully unlocking from strict rules on July 19.

Health psychologist Professor Robert West said he believed a gap between the number of coronavirus cases and the infection rate is because UK citizens are not reporting symptoms in order to avoid self-isolation.

He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “One of the things that is of a concern is that people may not be coming forward as they used to do for testing.

“One of the reasons for that may be that the messaging from the government in a way has sort of given a bit of a green light to people to say, ‘well, it is not so bad if you get the infection’.

“If you get tested you’re going to have to self-isolate, at least at the moment, and that’s going to be very disruptive. I suspect that may be a factor.”

The current Government rules for self-isolation are that if a person been has been in close contact with another who has had a positive test result for coronavirus, then that person must stay at home and complete 10 full days of isolation, even if they have been fully vaccinated.
