St Paul’s Cathedral: Police descend on London icon over reports of ‘man with firearm’

Police swooped on the area popular with tourists and made the arrest close to the shopping centre One New Change. Officers also cordoned off an area near the iconic church while they dealt with the incident. The City of London Police tweeted: “Following reports of an armed man at #StPaulsCathedral we can confirm we’ve arrested a man who we believe to be in possession of a firearm at 12.05 today.

“He was detained behind One New Change by armed officers.

“There is no indication this incident is terror-related at this time.”

David Krupski who witnessed the incident said he was heading out for la bite to eat with his colleagues when they saw everything unfold.  

He said: “We were going out for a team lunch and came across the scene. 

“Armed police stopped the guy and then tazed him to the ground and retrieved the gun.”

Photos posted by witnesses online showed officers arresting a man outside the grounds of St Paul’s.

One eye witness descbribed seeing the suspect being chased from the cathedral towards the shopping centre by security guards.

Detectives in forensic suits were seen collecting evidence outside the church. 

While the cathedral remains open, the shop inside the landmark is reportedly closed.
