Spotify boss admits ‘lessons learned’ after Harry and Meghan’s podcast flop

The CEO of Spotify has hinted at the reason why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s podcast series was cancelled – pointing towards “innovation” issues and unhappy listeners.

The Archetypes podcast arose out of an £18million deal the couple made with Spotify. That deal collapsed in June, despite the show winning awards, the Daily Mirror reports.

The aim of the series was to “investigate, dissect and subvert the labels that try to hold women back”.

It featured Meghan Markle sitting down to speak with well-known celebrities like Serena Williams, Mindy Kaling and Paris Hilton.

But after just 12 episodes, Spotify co-founder and current CEO Daniel Ek pulled it from the streaming service, justifying his choice in a recent BBC interview.

“We thought new innovation was needed to happen here. We thought we can come in and offer a great experience that both makes consumers very happy and allows new creators new avenues.

“And the truth of the matter is, some of it has worked, some of it hasn’t.”

He added: “We’re learning from those and we are moving on and we wish all of the ones we didn’t renew with the best of success they can have going forward.”

Meghan and Harry signed the deal in 2020 with the agreement they would host “programming that uplifts and entertains audiences around the world”.

Before its cancellation there was a bizarre development when one report mentioned Prince Harry’s desire to interview not only Donald Trump, Pope Francis and Mark Zuckerberg, but also warlord Vladimir Putin, to ask about their childhood traumas and upbringings.

Meanwhile, after the cancellation of the show, the couple failed in their attempts to gain exclusive copyright ownership of the “Archetype” name.

The US Patent and Trademark Office deemed the “likelihood of confusion” with another brand as the main reason for their rejection of the application.
