Sophie, who is married to the Queen’s youngest son Prince Edward, made a special video call to Treloar School student Poppy and her family to thank the pupil for raising money during the pandemic. The royal also spoke with staff who work at the charity, which provides education and support to young people with physical disabilities, to thank them their work during the coronavirus crisis.

Sophie, who is patron to the Treloar Trust, joined a video call with staff and students on Tuesday July 7.

The royal spent much of the call speaking with Poppy who raised money for Treloar’s in Alton, Hampshire by doing a half-marathon of laps in her garden – similar to the tremendous efforts of Sir Captain Tom Moore.

Such a task didn’t come easily to Poppy, as she has quadriplegic cerebral palsy, but she completed the task nonetheless.

Poppy’s dad, Rob, and her elder brother, Sam, also joined the call and chatted with the Countess.

It is not the first time Poppy has embarked on a fundraising challenge for the school, as she completed the Brighton Marathon in 2017 with the help of her brother, who pushed her around the course.

While chatting to the royal, Poppy and her family opened up about life in lockdown.

The family said they had been keeping busy by baking, gardening and participating in virtual quizzes.

Poppy even shared her recipe for CocaCola cake.

They also discussed how the use of PPE by Treloar’s staff might affect Poppy when she returns to school, as the student uses lip reading as a form of communicating.

Rob said the school had helped Poppy tremendously during the lockdown, and doesn’t feel as though her daughter has missed out by not attending school in person.

He said: “Treloar’s focus on enablement has made the world of difference to Poppy, building her confidence and independence.

“Poppy has been very good at organising her time during lockdown and is great at her school work.

“She has not missed out at all and Treloar’s is such a great school and she has really been able to achieve such a lot.

“Treloar’s has really had to think on its feet and had a very difficult job.”

After speaking with Poppy’s family, Sophie then chatted with members of staff from the charity who have been working through the pandemic.

She thanked them for their hard work fortitude, selflessness and kindness shown during this difficult time.

The Countess said: “I am always so impressed with the work of Treloar’s and this just shows that you have stepped up and coped with what has been hurled at us all out of the blue.

“The families must be so pleased that their children are lucky enough to go to Treloar’s and so grateful.

“This makes me even prouder to be part of Treloar’s. Thank you so much.”

Throughout the pandemic the charity has continued to provide high quality education, care, therapy and medical support for young disabled people.
