Sophie Wessex is the wife of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s youngest son, Prince Edward. The Earl and Countess of Wessex share two children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn. Lady Louise has always been fond of horses, bringing her especially close to her grandmother with whom she shares the passion of carriage driving.

But, this year, the young Royal was forced to give up competing in her favourite event.

Lady Louise Windsor made her debut as a carriage driving at the Royal Horse Show in 2017.

Her mother has since revealed even if the show hadn’t been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, Lady Louise was never planning to compete this year.

Prince Edward and Sophie made a virtual appearance at the Royal Windsor Horse Show earlier this year, which took place online for the first time in history.

During the interview, the Earl and Countess of Wessex took the opportunity to open up about their family life.

Beaming with pride for her daughter, Sophie said: “Absolutely, I trail in her wake frankly.

“No, she is so naturally good at it, she really is. It’s something that she has taken to very well.”

But, just like any other teenager, Lady Louise’s main focus has been her exams this year meaning she was never intending to take part.

Sophie explained: “Yeah, she wouldn’t have been able to compete this year because she would have been in the middle of exams, but it’s a lovely thing to do.

“To actually participate in the horse show, you know, has been a really special thing for her to do.

“And in fact, actually, the first time she participated was of course in the pageant, which she adored.”

The Earl and Countess of Wessex are Royal Vice Presidents of the Royal Windsor Horse Show – which is famously one of the Queen’s most treasured annual events.

During the chat, Sophie revealed the Queen always has a huge smile on her face when one of her horses wins at the show.

She said: “We’re always really hoping, whenever we bump into her, it’s a question, sort of, you know ‘how many winners?

“She always has a huge smile on her face when she’s had a place, which is fantastic.”

Lady Louise undoubtedly gets her love of all things horses from her grandparents, who are both avid equestrian fans.

Queen Elizabeth’s love of horses is a lifelong passion, and she has been riding for the vast majority of her 93-year life.

In 2014, the monarch was presented the International Equestrian Federation (IEF) Lifetime Achievement Award for her dedication to the sport.

FEI President Princess Haya of Jordan said: “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth is a life-long lover of horses who has inspired millions around the world.

“She is a true horsewoman, who still rides whenever state business allows, and her knowledge of breeding and bloodlines is incredible.”
