Sophie, Countess of Wessex, 55, is married to the Queen’s youngest son Prince Edward, 56, and mother two the Queen’s two youngest grandchildren – Lady Louise Windsor, 16, and James, Viscount Severn, 12. In recent weeks Sophie has flown the royal flag and given Britons a morale boost during difficult times.

Queen Elizabeth II, 93, is currently self-isolating at Windsor Castle with her husband Prince Philip, 98.

While the Queen has issued a heartfelt statement to the nation amid the coronavirus crisis she is yet to address Britons in person which some hope she will do in the coming weeks with a televised speech.

The Queen has been relying on social media to stay in touch with her subjects and has been issuing regular morale-boosting messages and supportive updates via the Royal Family Twitter account.

These have so far included a photograph of the Queen in her living room at Windsor holding her weekly audience with Prime Minister Boris Johnson by telephone as well as videos and photos from other Royal Family members.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have kept a low profile in recent weeks ahead of their official step down as senior royals.

They have relocated from Canada to Los Angeles ahead of their royal exit which takes effect at midnight tonight.

Meghan and Harry have been more muted on social media than usual, sharing slogans with quotes and information instead of personal photos, while Sophie Countess of Wessex has put out personal videos to those suffering amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The first was shared by the Royal Family Twitter account last week and was filmed by Sophie’s daughter Lady Louise.

The first clip of Sophie was a video filmed by her daughter Lady Louise Windsor, 16, and shared as a story on Instagram.

In the video, Sophie shared a reassuring message with parents faced with homeschooling their children during lockdown.

The Countess said: ”For parents and carers, it can be a daunting time to help our children and young people through this period of uncertainty.

“But please don’t feel alone.

“Make use of the resources out there and the fantastic digital communities that are sharing them and supporting them.

“Stay safe and thinking of you all.”

Sophie’s whole family came together for another recent clip shared by the Royal Family Twitter account which captured them all clapping for the NHS.

In the video, Sophie’s husband Prince Edward said: “So from all of us just a huge thank you to so many of you working on the frontline, we really appreciate it.”

Sophie’s personal approach to royal duty at a time of national crisis shows she is ready to take on a more proactive role if needed following Meghan and Harry’s withdrawal.

Sophie and Prince Edward are the youngest senior royals after Prince William and Kate and would be the most obvious couple to fill the gap left behind by the Sussexes.

Heir apparent Prince Charles, 71, tested positive for coronavirus last week after displaying mild symptoms.

While he is said to be doing well and is out of self-isolation the coronavirus outbreak has put the upper echelons of the monarchy at risk.

The Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, 72, are all aged over 70 and are considered at high risk from coronavirus.

The global pandemic has pushed the younger members of the Royal Family to step forward more than ever.
