However, over recent months she has emerged on everyone’s radar. According to royal author Ingrid Seward, the 56-year-old is encouraged by the Queen to fill the glaring gap left by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle upon leaving for California.

Ingrid Seward told The Times: “The Queen is very canny. And she has always been very fond of Sophie.

“Prince Philip adored Sophie, and the Queen feels that now is the moment to push her, just gently. ‘Give some interviews, do some stuff. You work very hard, no one takes any notice. Get out there.’ I can see her saying that.

“It’s what Prince Philip would have wanted, and now he is gone, doing what he would have wanted keeps his memory alive. I think he would have really liked Edward and Sophie to be a bit more high profile.”

The Countess and Prince Philip had a special bond. When the Duke died, his daughter-in-law expressed to the BBC how difficult it has been for the family in his absence.

“He’s left a giant-sized hole in our lives,” she said.

Sophie is a full-time working member of the Royal Family and patron of over 70 charities and organisations.

Before getting married to Prince Edward, the Countess worked in public relations and opened an agency she co-ran for several years.

With the push from the Queen, Sophie will be taking on more royal duties and responsibilities.

“There is increased interest in us as a family but, if it raises more awareness of the issues I care about, then that can only be a good thing,” Sophie told Naga Munchetty in response to a question about picking up duties left behind by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

With the spotlight on Sophie and her family, many are wondering what role in the Royal Family her children will fill.

However, back in 2020, Sophie told The Sunday Times that, even though her eldest, Lady Louise, is turning 18 this year, her children will not be taking royal titles.

She said: “We try to bring them up with the understanding they are very likely to have to work for a living.

“Hence we made the decision not to use HRH titles. They have them and can decide to use them from 18, but I think it’s highly unlikely.”
