In January of this year Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their plans to step back as senior members of the Royal Family. While many royals have stayed quiet on the issue dubbed as Megxit, Sophie, Countess of Wessex recently addressed the couple’s decision to say goodbye to royal life.

Prince Harry and Meghan returned to the UK for their final round of royal engagements in March, before jetting to North America.

The couple stayed in Canada for a little while, but they later headed to Los Angeles, California, before the borders closed due to coronavirus.

The Sussexes have now bought what is believed to be their permanent family home in Santa Barbara, California – just a short drive from Hollywood.

Meghan and Harry’s brief return to royal engagements in March was widely anticipated by royal fans, and all eyes were on the couple.

For one of their final engagements, Meghan and Harry attended the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey in March.

And during the service, it was noticeable that Harry and Meghan opted to sit with Sophie, Countess of Wessex and her husband of more than two decades, Prince Edward.

Sophie reportedly became a close confidante of Meghan’s after starting life as a senior royal in 2018.

The Wessexes live only 10 miles away from the former primary Sussex residence of Frogmore Cottage.

But Sophie also has first-hand experience of the royal spotlight, and how daunting it can be to join the Royal Family.

In a recent interview with the Sunday Times, Sophie briefly commented on Meghan and Harry’s exit from the Royal Family.

She said of her own experience of becoming royal: “Remember I’d had five years to adjust and for our six-month engagement I was even staying in Buckingham Palace.

“Not that you necessarily know how it will pan out.”

When Prince Harry and Meghan married in 2018, the couple immediately began their new roles as senior working royals.

Sophie explained the Royal Family always try to help newcomers adjust to their new roles.

The Countess of Wessex told the publication how the Royal Family “all try to help any new member of the family.”

Sophie also gave her best wishes to the couple, adding: “I just hope they will be happy.”

In recent weeks Harry and Meghan have taken on more public appearances, after keeping a relatively low profile during the coronavirus pandemic.

Most recently Meghan has ventured into the world of politics, using her platform to encourage women to vote in the upcoming US presidential election in November.

Little is currently known about the Sussexes’ future plans, only that their new charitable platform will be called Archewell.

In the terms of their royal exit, it was revealed Meghan and Harry hoped to continue pursuing and highlighting charitable and philanthropic causes.
