Sophie Wessex hiring assistant private secretary as she prepares for more responsibilities

The Earl and Countess of Wessex are looking for someone to support them “in all aspects of their official engagements and duties”. The position is being advertised on the Royal Household website and comes as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are quitting the monarchy for a new life in North America.

The advert says: “Your responsibilities will be diverse, as you assist the principal private secretary and the private secretary to the Countess of Wessex with the provision of advice in organising all aspects of official programmes for Their Royal Highnesses, including managing themed projects and patronages.

“Acting as lead in managing the weekly programming priorities, you will be responsible for providing continuity and programme management oversight in support of the principal private secretary.

“Managing a small team of programme coordinators, you will supervise the detailed preparation and implementation of elements of TRH’s official programme.”

The position is based at Prince Edward and Sophie’s Bagshot Park residence in Surrey and the annual salary is £45,000.

The Wessexes are looking for a “trusted adviser” with “good general knowledge of current affairs”.

Management, administrative and organisational skills are a must.

And the candidate must “work to high standards with great attention to detail”.

The advert adds: “As well as diplomacy, excellent judgement will be key to this role, along with great interpersonal and communication skills.

“You will hold the ability to gain credibility at a senior level, both internally and externally, and represent TRHs at all levels.

“A self-motivated, flexible outlook and the ability to work under pressure, along with an appetite to work at both an operational and strategic level will stand you in good stead.”

Anyone with military or government experience also has an advantage, according to the advert.

It follows speculation that Sophie could pick up extra royal duties with Meghan and Harry walking away from the monarchy.

Last month, royal author Phil Dampier said Sophie would be “perfect to take up some of the slack”.

The royal expert said: “She is very close to Her Majesty and is a favourite of hers.

“Recently she has been on several overseas trips and done fantastically well.

“Now that her children are a bit older I think there could be a great role for her to play. She is 55 today and she is very fit and full of energy.

“I think she wants to do more and would happily step up to the plate and take over more duties if asked.

“Charles has to realise that you can slim down too much and they are running out of royals to do the nitty gritty work.

“Sophie would be perfect to take up some of the slack and I think she has the potential to be a royal superstar given the chance.

“If it was Sophie’s choice I think she would grab it with both hands.”

Meghan and Harry officially stand down on March 31.

Their last official royal engagement is expected to be the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey on March 9.
