Sophie Wessex appears emotional during vigil for Queen

Heartbreaking images pictured Sophie, Countess of Wessex arriving at Balmoral, with other members of the Royal Family, more than an hour after the Queen’s death. Her Majesty died peacefully at the castle in Scotland on September 8 – and an extract of the late monarch’s death certificate reveals she died at 3.10pm.

News that Her Late Majesty had taken ill came from Buckingham Palace. Her children King Charles III and Princess Anne were already nearby in Scotland.

However, her other children and grandchildren rushed to airports after learning the monarch was unwell.

Sophie of Wessex, alongside her husband Prince Edward as well as Prince Andrew and Prince William, boarded a flight at RAF Northolt which landed in Aberdeen shortly before 4pm.

The Royals arrived at Balmoral estate shortly before 5pm – one hour and 50 minutes after Queen Elizabeth II died.

The heartbreaking revelation means that as the Royals were rushing to Balmoral, they were already too late to said goodbye to the late Sovereign.

In a statement, the Earl and Countess of Wessex paid tribute to Her Majesty. It read: “Sophie and I have taken huge pleasure in seeing our James and Louise enjoying the places and activities that their grandparents loved so much.

“Given that my mama let us spend so much time with her, I think she also rather enjoyed watching those passions blossom.

“Those times together, those happy memories, have now become massively precious to each and every one of us.”

Sophie was later seen kneeling with tears in her eyes as she read tributes left by the public at Balmoral.

She has been described as the Royal Family’s “secret weapon” and is said to have greatly comforted the Queen following the death of Prince Philip last year.

The Queen’s death certificate lists her cause of death as “old age”.

Buckingham Palace released a statement following her death. It said: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

“The King and Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

The day marked an end of an era for Britain, led by its longest reigning monarch, crowned 70 years ago.

Her Late Majesty’s death brought tributes from around the globe and heads of state from across the world travelled to London to attend her funeral.

The monarch has now been laid to rest beside her husband in St George’s Chapel, where her sister Princess Margaret, the Queen Mother and her father King George VI are also buried.
