Sophie, Countess of Wessex, 56, married Queen Elizabeth II’s youngest son Prince Edward, 57, in 1999 and while the couple didn’t become full-time working royals until 2002 they are now considered to be among the Firm’s biggest assets.

However, even before they rose up the ranks of the monarchy, the Queen has long since had a soft spot for the couple.

Ahead of their marriage, they were allowed to cohabit at Kensington Palace – something no previous girlfriend had been permitted to do.

And according to royal experts and insiders, it is their lasting marriage that makes them favourites of the Queen.

The Queen is the head of the Church of England and deems marriage to be a sacred union.

The Queen was married to her late husband Prince Philip for an extraordinary 73 years until his death in April.

But despite their parents enduring marriage all of the Queen’s children bar Edward have been through divorces.

In 1992, when three of the Queen’s children’s marriages ended she referred to it as her ‘annus horribilis’, or ‘horrible year’.

It was the year Prince Charles, 72, and his first wife Princess Diana officially separated after his affair with Camilla, Parker Bowles was exposed.

As head of the Royal Household, the Queen has weathered her fair share of family scandals but is averse to drama and may appreciate Sophie and Edward as a pair of steady hands.

The couple’s low-key dedication to the crown may be welcome amid what has been a dramatic 18 months for the Firm.

The Queen’s soft spot for the Wessexes no doubt saw her grant the couple permission to give an extensive interview to the Telegraph about how the Royal Family were grieving the late Duke of Edinburgh earlier this month.

And on June 10, what would have been Philip’s 100th birthday, the Earl of Wessex became the first member of the monarchy to explicitly speaking out about the rift with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Edward told CNN: “It’s difficult for everyone, but that’s families for you.”

Touching on the Sussexes decision to step back, he said: “Weirdly we’ve all been there before – we’ve all had excessive intrusion and attention in our lives.

“And we’ve all dealt with it in slightly different ways, and we wish them the very best of luck. It’s a really hard decision.”

Sophie and Edward live at Bagshot Park in Surrey with their two teenage children Lady Louise Windsor, 17, and James, Viscount Severn, 13.

The royal residence is a short distance from Windsor Castle where the Queen is now based.

On Tuesday, Sophie was among the royals to attend the opening day of Royal Ascot 2021.

The Queen was unable to visit the racecourse as she had to host Australia’s Prime Minister at Windsor Castle but is expected to visit later in the week.
