The Scottish Conservative Councillor for Cupar, Tony Miklinski told Express.co.uk that Scotland’s record on education and health prior to the coronavirus pandemic was weak. He added that under the SNP Government and Nicola Sturgeon’s leadership Scotland has fallen down the education league tables and repeatedly missed health and social care targets.

Mr Miklinski said: “On both education and health their record historically before COVID wasn’t great and that is putting it mildly.

“We are falling down the standings of education tables.

“The targets set by the SNP themselves for health and social care are being missed repeatedly.

“There is a real conservatism with a small c behind Nicola Sturgeon’s approach.

“She wants to be behind England at all times as that is the safe place to be.”

He added: “We have to move to a position where we take some risk otherwise we are not going to have an economy and a lifestyle that we want when we come back from this.

“So gently and carefully step by step we need to get back to some sort of normality.

“There are all sorts of ways in which the Government can pursue this.”

During the same interview, the Scottish Conservative stated that Boris Johnson would not survive as Prime Minister if he gave Nicola Sturgeon a second referendum on Scottish independence.

Mr Miklinski added Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP should respect that result of the 2014 referendum on Scottish independence.

He said: “I do not think that the Conservative Government with a majority in Westminster and with Boris Johnson as Prime Minister will ever give Nicola Sturgeon a second independence referendum.

“It will not happen on his watch, it cannot happen.

“I do not think he would survive if he were to go down that route and that is because there is no moral or legal case for it.

“The referendum in 2014 gave the result, the SNP hate the result and that is why they continually campaign for another one but that does not make it right.

“They have had a referendum they cannot have one every 5 years or every 10 years hoping that you will just catch once the right answer or the right time for your thinking.

“They should respect the result and get on with life.”
