Snow blankets parts of UK as temperatures plunge to -7C
Parts of the UK have seen the first snowfall of the season as temperatures plummet below freezing.
Saturday got off to a chilly start with -7C recorded in Braemar, Scotland in the morning.
In other areas the mercury struggled to rise above freezing as snow made its way towards Wales and north England.
Snowdonia, Wrexham, and Mold are among the areas covered in blankets of snow.
Two football matches in the Cymru Premier have been called off due to the weather – Cefn Druids v Cardiff Met and The New Saints v Carmarthen Town.
Shropshire and Merseyside have also been impacted by the cold snap.
Sleet, rain, frost, fog and strong winds will also pose problems for commuters next week.
However, while temperatures will remain cold, the snow is not expected to spread.
Met Office meteorologist Luke Miall said that any snow on Sunday night and Monday morning will likely be confined to high ground in Scotland.
He told the Mirror Online: ‘It’s going to stay cold and quite unsettled across the UK, similar to what we’ve had this week.
‘The main risk of snow is probably going to be on Monday morning or Sunday night into Monday morning.
‘Some places could wake up to covering by rush hour.
‘As the week progresses the main risk of any winteriness will be confined to the higher ground in Scotland and perhaps over the Pennines and the mountains in Wales, especially North Wales.’
According to the Met Office’s five day forecast, rain is expected to ease overnight, but Sunday will be ‘cold for many’.
There will be showers in the south and east but ‘plenty of sunny spells’.
Northern Ireland, where a yellow weather warning is in place for ice, will see the worst of the wind and rain.
The Outlook from Monday to Wednesday is ‘unsettled’, with heavy and frequent showers expected in the West.
The Met Office say: ‘The end of the week will probably remain cold and unsettled, with rain/showers and some snow on northern hills.
Winds may turn to a more easterly direction, which would lead more rain in the east and drier conditions for western locations.
‘Overnight frost and fog is likely during quieter periods, which may extend across much of the country from the northwest towards the end of the period. However, spells of wind and rain are still possible across southern parts.’
