Snow and ice blankets UK as temperatures plummet to freezing

People all over the country are waking up to snow and ice after being hit by Storm Bella over the weekend.

Heavy rains and gale-force winds wreaked havoc, leaving homes underwater and without power, but 103 flood warnings and 193 alerts remain in place today.

Snow and ice warnings also cover Northern Ireland, most of Scotland and Wales.

Temperatures will plummet to 0C in London with a maximum of just 5C, with snow and ice warnings in the north-west of England, the Midlands, Taunton in the west and London in the east.

Cold weather has already turned to snow in some places, blanketing cars and driveways all over.

The yellow warnings are in place until 6pm tonight with the Met Office warning Brits to be careful about injuring themselves when walking over icy surfaces and to be aware of travel delays.

The last several days brought severe flooding to parts of southern England before Storm Bella hit Boxing day with winds of more than 100mph.

By this morning parts of eastern England had also been flooded with kayakers taking to the roads in Norfolk in an attempt to traverse water-logged streets.

Despite the bad conditions, gale-force winds meant that for the first time ever more than half of Britain’s electricity was generated by wind power on Saturday.

According to energy firm Drax, 50.67% of the country’s power was produced by wind turbines on Boxing Day.

Meanwhile, Gloucestershire Police has warned members of the public to take care as reports of snow around the county were causing disruption.

The force said: ‘Heavy snow is starting to fall in the rural parts of the county. This will cause delays on the roads.

‘Only go out if it is essential to do so. Make sure you plan your route and have everything you may need in an emergency including a fully-charged mobile phone.

‘We are receiving a number of reports of snow around the county causing disruption, particularly in the Forest of Dean and the A417 around Birdlip. Please stay safe and avoid all unnecessary travel.’
