The post-Brexit trade talks between the UK and European Union began in March following Britain’s official departure from the bloc on January 31. But negotiations have been dominated by bitter squabbling, as the two sides trade blows over what each other is demanded be included in any trade agreement. Key areas such as the level playing field, state aid, tax and access to the single market all still remain unresolved – with no solution in sight.

Earlier this week, Downing Street accused Brussels of “wishful thinking” over claims the UK could be prepared to relent from its expectations when it came to fishing.

The EU is hoping Britain will downgrade its expectations with respect to “level playing field” trade rules if Brussels does likewise with its demands related to regulatory alignment and access to UK waters.

Now Express.co.uk readers have unanimously backed Mr Johnson not to compromise over fishing right in order to secure a post-Brexit trade deal with the EU.

The latest poll from Express.co.uk, which ran from 10.15am until 9.15pm on Thursday June 6, asked: “Should Boris compromise over fishing to secure trade deal?”

From the 19,045 people who voted, a huge 95 percent (17,973 readers) said the Prime Minister should not back down over UK fishing demands to secure a trade deal with the EU.

Just five percent (953 readers) believe he will relent on this position, while less than one percent (119 readers) were undecided.

One Express.co.uk reader said: “The EU needs to be told to go and sling it’s fishing hooks outside of our territorial waters.

“Any EU trawler that fails to do so will be impounded and used by our fishermen/women.”

A second person wrote: “The proposal for access to UK waters put forward by the government are exactly the same as the arrangements the EU has in place with other sovereign nations.

“It shouldn’t need to be any sweeter for them. If it’s good enough then it’s good enough.

“No cherry picking!”

Another simply said: “No no no! Not even one percent of our waters to the EU!”

But despite Express.co.uk readers throwing their support behind Mr Johnson, they warned any change of heart could end his tenure as Prime Minister and see his Conservative Party wiped out at the next general election.

One person warned: “If Boris extends the transition period, sells out on fisheries, continues with control of ECJ (European Court of Justice) or adopts the level playing field, then both Boris and the Conservative Party are finished.”

A second Express.co.uk reader said: “If Boris ever thinks of giving in to the EU, he can sure say goodbye to being PM and his party will be wiped out at the next general election.”

Earlier this week, Downing Street lashed out at the EU and put another dent in the bloc’s hopes of securing favourable fishing rights as part of any post-Brexit trade deal.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “This is wishful thinking by the EU.

“We have always been clear there is no question of splitting the difference on level playing field and fish.

“We are not compromising on those because our position on these is fundamental to an independent country.

“Any agreement has to deal with this reality.”
