Six injured after heating and ventilation equipment collapses into resort pool

Six people were injured after a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system crashed into a pool in a luxury resort in Colorado.

Large metal ductwork and mechanical parts collapsed into the Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center’s indoor pool on Saturday morning.

Debris from the HVAC system covered the entire pool area, a spokesperson from Aurora Fire Rescue said.

Six people were hospitalized with injuries after the crash, including two who had ‘life-threatening’ injuries, the fire department said.

The ages and identities of the victims have not been released. They were taken to local hospitals in Colorado.

First responders estimated that about 50-100 guests were swimming in the pool when the collapse occurred.

‘There were still hazards present with the threat of ongoing falling debris and mechanical systems’ after guests were evacuated from the pool, the fire department said.

Aurora Fire Rescue were luckily already at the scene when the collapse occurred. They were conducting physical training at the Gaylord property, running up and down the hotel’s stairwells.

‘This allowed a quick response of highly trained paramedics and EMTs who went right away to the pool to assist patients,’ the fire department stated.

‘I would like to share that the men and women of this agency train for this type of incident every day,’ Aurora Fire Chief Alec Oughton said. ‘I am proud of their rapid and effective response in caring for our community.’

A spokesperson for the Gaylord Rockies told Metro.co.uk that they were ‘devastated’ by the incident on Saturday.

‘Our top priorities were to support emergency responders and render assistance to those directly impacted, and we’re very grateful to the Aurora Fire Department for their swift actions,’ the hotel stated.

They continued: ‘Moving forward, we are focused on helping our affected guests and associates, and we are working with the appropriate experts to conduct a thorough investigation.’
