Sources have told Independent.ie that they believe the two men were on the way to commit a shooting, but the identity of the target was unclear last night.
The arrest of the older man, from north Dublin, has been described by sources as “highly significant” as he is a suspect in a number of shootings including the murder of the Gerry ‘The Monk” Hutch’s brother Eddie Hutch Snr just days after the Regency Hotel attack which saw Kinahan linked mobster David Byrne shot dead.
The man has been living abroad for several years after being questioned over the Hutch/Kinahan feud murder and was also wanted for other serious crimes.
The younger man is also understood to be a known criminal with links to a Finglas drugs mob.
They are being held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and can be held for up to three days.
