The cat does not appear to be moving in the footage which is believed to have been taken in the Carnforth area of Lancashire.
After it is thrown over the edge, the black and white cat vanishes out of shot in the footage which appeared on Snapchat, Facebook and Twitter.
The footage was widely condemned by social media users, some of whom described it as “disgusting” and “sickening”, according to Lancashire Live.
Lancashire Constabulary confirmed on Tuesday it is aware of the 14-second clip and is investigating.
The force believes it happened in the Carnforth area, but the exact place and circumstances have yet to be confirmed.
