News that the corporation had set up a dedicated complaints form after being inundated by irate viewers about its Prince Philip coverage sparked outrage. Many hit out after they were stopped from watching shows like Eastenders because of the historic figure’s death.

The Duke of Edinburgh dedicated his life to public service carrying out 22,219 solo engagements before he retired in 2017 at the age of 96.

Following his death yesterday morning aged 99, the BBC suspended all non-news programming as a mark of respect which prompted a slew of complaints.

In response, the corporation created a dedicated page where people could vent about its coverage of the Queen’s late husband.

Media Editor at the Guardian Jim Waterson, wrote: “The BBC, having adopted wall-to-wall Prince Philip coverage to avoid being criticised in parts of the media and politics…. has now received so many complaints about their wall-to-wall coverage they’ve set up a streamlined form to complain about it.”

Readers were furious as they responded on Express.co.uk’s Facebook page to a story about the BBC receiving complaints and later setting up a new complaint procedure over their coverage of Philip’s death.

One wrote: “Not surprised BBC is paying the price for being (a) lefty organisation! Serves them right.”

Another said: “It just goes to show how much c**p is churned out by the BBC and the people who watch it.

“A day of decent programming and the complaints roll in from those missing their daily dose of c**p.”

And a third raged: “First time for years the BBC is not spouting its biased opinions.

“In the meantime not sacrificing airtime for anything worth watching.

“At least the BBC is showing respect, however, it’s giving the whingeing, miserable, lunatic woke and snowflakes something to go on about, must be toe-curling for them to see the love and admiration the decent normal majority of the nation have for him.”

On its website, the BBC invited people to complain about its coverage of the senior royal’s death.

It said: “Death of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh – too much coverage on BBC TV.

“We’re receiving complaints about too much TV coverage of the death of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

“Please enter your email address below to register a complaint about this – we’ll then send you the BBC’s response as soon as it is available.”

And as well as complaining directly to the Beeb, many took to social media to air their views.

One wrote: “I turned my TV off as soon as I heard via message. It has been on all 5 terrestrial channels ALL bloody day!

“Not everyone is a royalist so not everybody wants this SHOVED down our throats.

“Christ knows how bad it will be when (the) Queen dies! Dread to think.”

Another wrote: “Don’t waste your breath, cancel your licence fee and watch Netflix.”

Their views were attacked.

One responded: “This nauseating criticism of the coverage of the death of The Duke of Edinburgh drives me mad.

“He is a hugely important figure & it’s a sad, historic event but people whinge because they can’t watch Eastenders.

“If you don’t like (it) go and do something else but stop being nasty.”

Another pointed out: “Prince Philip has served OUR Queen and this country for more than seven decades with bravery (mentioned in dispatches during the war), with great honour and dignity.

“It’s about time the BBC showed some respect and to show his life for a few days is nothing more than they should.

“Take off ‘Eastenders’ and other programmes is no hardship. I hope they show the gun salutes at 12:00 today and much more during the Queen’s eight days of mourning!

“Any complaints should go straight into the rubbish bin where they belong along with my negative survey.”
